HeadX Duo : Support Page
Getting Started
What's in the Box
Your HeadX Duo arrives with the following:
- HeadX Duo head-mounted unit (integrated crosshair laser and 9DOF IMU)
- PVC strap with elastic cord adjustment
- Hard-wearing shock-resistant storage box
A USB-C cable is not included. Use any standard USB-C cable with a 5 V power source to charge the device. Do not use fast chargers, as these will damage the device.
If anything is missing or damaged on arrival, please contact us at support@headx.co.uk.
Fitting & Operating the device
Fitting the Device
The Duo is worn circumferentially around the head. The PVC strap sits around the head with the laser unit positioned at the front, and the elastic cord adjustment is located at the rear.
- Loosen the elastic cord at the rear to its fullest extent.
- Place the Duo on the patient's head with the laser projecting forward, positioned roughly level with the mid-forehead. The charging port and device button should face vertically upward.
- Tighten the elastic cord at the rear until the unit sits securely. The fit should be snug but comfortable — no pressure points, no slipping.
- Centre the unit left-to-right and confirm that hair is not caught under the strap.
- Activate the laser and check that the crosshair projects cleanly onto the target surface. If the beam appears angled or displaced, reposition the unit and recheck.
Important: Power on the Duo and confirm the app connection before fitting the device to the patient.
Powering On, Off, and Laser Control
The Duo has a single green function button on the front of the device. Pressing it cycles through the following states:
- Off
- Laser on — Bluetooth connectivity available
- Laser off — Bluetooth connectivity available
- Off
To power on, press the button once. To switch to laser-off/Bluetooth-only mode, press again. Press once more to power off.
LED Status Indicator
The LED on the top of the device indicates the current device state
- Blue : Device on, Bluetooth available
- Red : Low battery
- Green/Yellow flashing : Battery charging
- Green : Battery fully charged
- White : Firmware updating
- Purple : Calibrating
Software & App Support
HeadX App Overview
The HeadX companion app for Duo is available on iOS and Android. It provides:
- Bluetooth connection and device management
- ROM assessment with real-time angular readout
- Joint Position Sense testing and repositioning error logging
- Session naming and history
- Export of session data (PDF report and CSV data export
Connecting to the Duo
Power on the Duo and open the HeadX app with Bluetooth enabled. On the app homepage, select the HeadX Duo device from the dropdown, then select the specific HeadX Duo unit you wish to connect to. Once connected, follow the in-app prompts to begin a session.
If the device does not appear, ensure Bluetooth is enabled and the Duo is powered on and within range (approximately 10 metres, unobstructed).
Session Management
The HeadX app does not include a patient management system. Sessions can be named freely, and using the patient's name or identifier as the session name is the recommended approach for keeping individual results organised and easy to retrieve.
Name each session clearly before beginning — for example using initials, a patient reference number, or a date-name combination — so that results can be attributed accurately when reviewing session history or exporting data.
Sessions can be deleted by selecting the trash can icon on the app homepage. Deleted sessions are removed permanently from the device and cannot be recovered.
Data Storage and Privacy
All session data is stored locally on the mobile device running the HeadX app.
No data is transmitted to, accessed by, or backed up by HeadX.
HeadX Ltd has no visibility of any session records, measurement results, or patient information captured through the app.
Clinicians and practitioners are responsible for the management, security, and retention of all data held on their device in accordance with their own data protection obligations.
Firmware Update
Preparation
- Power: Ensure the Duo is charged. If the LED is red, charge it first to avoid update failure.
- Connection: Power on the device, connect it to the HeadX app, and keep it near your phone or tablet.
Update Process
- Go to Device Settings > Update Firmware in the app.
- Review the details and tap Update.
- During the update: The LED will turn white. Do not power off the device, press the function button, or disconnect Bluetooth.
Completion
- The update takes a few minutes, after which the Duo will automatically restart.
- The LED will return to blue when ready.
- Support: If the device fails to restart or the LED stays white, contact support@headx.co.uk.
Tip: Check for updates regularly in the app to maintain peak performance and compatibility.
Device Calibration
The HeadX Duo is factory calibrated and does not require routine calibration before sessions. Power on the device and allow a short settling time before fitting to the patient — hold the device still during this period.
Magnetic calibration is only required if significant and persistent measurement errors are observed across multiple sessions — for example, if axial rotation values appear consistently offset or drift noticeably during use.
When to recalibrate:
- Persistent angular errors across multiple patients and sessions that cannot be explained by strap fit or patient movement.
- Noticeable drift in the resting neutral position when the device is stationary.
- After the device has been transported or stored near strong magnetic sources.
How to recalibrate:
Calibration must be performed in an open space free from magnetic interference. Move away from large metal structures, speaker systems, MRI equipment, and other electromagnetic sources. Remove any magnetic items from the immediate area.
- Hold Duo in a stable position.
- Open the HeadX app and navigate to Device Settings > Calibrate.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. The app will guide you through pointing the device in all directions across both the upper and lower hemispheres — covering the full sphere of orientations.
- Move slowly and smoothly, following the app prompts. Ensure you cover both above and below the horizontal plane.
- The app will confirm when calibration is complete and indicate whether it was successful.
If calibration fails or errors persist after a successful calibration, contact support@headx.co.uk with the unit serial number.
