HeadX Duo - Digital Goniometer & Laser - HeadX

Getting Started

What's in the Box

Your HeadX Duo arrives with the following:

  • HeadX Duo head-mounted unit (integrated crosshair laser and 9DOF IMU)
  • PVC strap with elastic cord adjustment
  • Hard-wearing shock-resistant storage box

A USB-C cable is not included. Use any standard USB-C cable with a 5 V power source to charge the device. Do not use fast chargers, as these will damage the device.

If anything is missing or damaged on arrival, please contact us at support@headx.co.uk.

JPS & ROM Assessments

Using HeadX Duo for Cervical Range of Motion Assessment

What it measures: The total angular range of active cervical movement across all planes, recorded in degrees. Because Duo uses an integrated IMU, no inclinometer, goniometer, or external reference target is required.

Setup: Seat the patient in a chair without a headrest. Fit the headset firmly around the mid-cranium. Open the app, go to Assessments > Range of Motion.

Set neutral: Ask the patient to adopt their natural upright head position.

Test: The patient moves actively to their comfortable end range in each direction. . Test all relevant planes: flexion, extension, left and right rotation, and left and right lateral flexion.

Results: ROM is displayed in degrees for each direction. Results can be used for longitudinal tracking across reassessment appointments.

After the session: Power down, wipe the headband with a clinical disinfectant, and store in the carry case.

Using HeadX Duo for Cervical Joint Position Sense Testing

What it measures: A patient's ability to accurately relocate their head to a neutral position after active movement — an objective measure of cervical proprioception.

Because Duo uses an integrated IMU, no target wall or fixed testing distance is required. Target is shown in the video to demonstrate accuracy of performance.

Setup: Seat the patient in a chair without a headrest. Fit the headset firmly around the mid-cranium. Open the app, go to Assessments > Joint Position Sense, and pair the device.

Set neutral: Ask the patient to adopt their natural upright head position.

Test: With eyes closed, the patient moves to end range then attempts to return to neutral. The clinician taps Record to capture the angular relocation error. Repeat for a minimum of three trials per direction across all relevant planes: flexion, extension, left and right rotation, and left and right lateral flexion. Manually guiding return to centre on each trial.

Results: Mean relocation error is shown in degrees. Values below 4.5° are generally within normal limits (orange and green zones); repeated errors above this suggest impaired proprioception. Results are saved to the patient profile for longitudinal tracking.

After the session: Power down, wipe the headband with a clinical disinfectant, and store in the carry case.

Fitting & Operating the device

Fitting the Device

The Duo is worn circumferentially around the head. The PVC strap sits around the head with the laser unit positioned at the front, and the elastic cord adjustment is located at the rear.

  1. Loosen the elastic cord at the rear to its fullest extent.
  2. Place the Duo on the patient's head with the laser projecting forward, positioned roughly level with the mid-forehead. The charging port and device button should face vertically upward.
  3. Tighten the elastic cord at the rear until the unit sits securely. The fit should be snug but comfortable — no pressure points, no slipping.
  4. Centre the unit left-to-right and confirm that hair is not caught under the strap.
  5. Activate the laser and check that the crosshair projects cleanly onto the target surface. If the beam appears angled or displaced, reposition the unit and recheck.

Important: Power on the Duo and confirm the app connection before fitting the device to the patient.

Powering On, Off, and Laser Control

The Duo has a single green function button on the front of the device. Pressing it cycles through the following states:

  1. Off
  2. Laser on — Bluetooth connectivity available
  3. Laser off — Bluetooth connectivity available
  4. Off

To power on, press the button once. To switch to laser-off/Bluetooth-only mode, press again. Press once more to power off.

LED Status Indicator

The LED on the top of the device indicates the current device state

  • Blue : Device on, Bluetooth available
  • Red : Low battery
  • Green/Yellow flashing : Battery charging
  • Green : Battery fully charged
  • White : Firmware updating
  • Purple : Calibrating

Software & App Support

HeadX Duo - Digital Goniometer & Laser - HeadX

HeadX App Overview

The HeadX companion app for Duo is available on iOS and Android. It provides:

  • Bluetooth connection and device management
  • ROM assessment with real-time angular readout
  • Joint Position Sense testing and repositioning error logging
  • Session naming and history
  • Export of session data (PDF report and CSV data export

Connecting to the Duo

Power on the Duo and open the HeadX app with Bluetooth enabled. On the app homepage, select the HeadX Duo device from the dropdown, then select the specific HeadX Duo unit you wish to connect to. Once connected, follow the in-app prompts to begin a session.

If the device does not appear, ensure Bluetooth is enabled and the Duo is powered on and within range (approximately 10 metres, unobstructed).

Session Management

The HeadX app does not include a patient management system. Sessions can be named freely, and using the patient's name or identifier as the session name is the recommended approach for keeping individual results organised and easy to retrieve.

Name each session clearly before beginning — for example using initials, a patient reference number, or a date-name combination — so that results can be attributed accurately when reviewing session history or exporting data.

Sessions can be deleted by selecting the trash can icon on the app homepage. Deleted sessions are removed permanently from the device and cannot be recovered.

Data Storage and Privacy

All session data is stored locally on the mobile device running the HeadX app.

No data is transmitted to, accessed by, or backed up by HeadX.

HeadX Ltd has no visibility of any session records, measurement results, or patient information captured through the app.

Clinicians and practitioners are responsible for the management, security, and retention of all data held on their device in accordance with their own data protection obligations.
